One specific tragedy that makes the mind wander into a stage of depression is death. Death of a friend, family member or spouse. Divorce during a child's teenage years may lead them to think it was their fault and this is why it is good to have a strong support group while facing these hardships. Support can come from extracurricular activities such as sports, social interactions and religious organizations (youth groups). Adolescent years can be an "anxious and unsettling" part of their life. By "leaving teens feeling isolated from family and peers" it can make them feel as if they are not worthy of being present (1). Losses of any kind make us feel hopeless, unworthy and unimportant. People often cling to their possessions to help them gain a sense of self-worth, and when they lose what they built their confidence around is gone, they are left to feel nothing but vulnerable. "Teen deaths for any reason are tragic losses of life and potential" and anyone could agree with that. The American Psychological Association has found that teen suicide is avertable with the right help. Around "90 percent of suicide deaths are from mental illnesses and or substance abuse disorders" which are both curable. When teens experience certain hardships in their life and begin to feel miserable, they turn to drugs and alcohol to cheer them up. And this is when addictions are formed. It has been founded that "53 percent of adolescents who commit suicide" are addicted to some form of narcotic (5). Drug and alcohol usage could be a desperate plea for help. Teens contemplating suicide could use this act of defiance to draw attention to them. Keep an eye out for those around you and recognize symptoms before it's too late to help.
